Music Education at Fairlight Glen

At Fairlight Glen, music education is a core part of our curriculum. We believe music plays a vital role in supporting young people’s cognitive development, emotional wellbeing, confidence, communication skills, and self-expression. Through music, students develop focus,

resilience, teamwork, and a strong sense of personal achievement.

Music also supports emotional regulation and mental health, offering students a positive outlet for creativity while helping them build self-esteem and motivation.

Music Production & Technology Suite

We are proud to offer a fully equipped Music Production Suite, featuring state-of-the-art technology in a relaxed, student-friendly

environment. Students work creatively using iPads and Apple Mac computers, industry-standard software, and professional audio

equipment.

The space is intentionally designed to feel calm and welcoming, with comfortable seating and beanbags that allow students to relax, feel safe, and fully engage in the creative process.

Songwriting, Performance & Student-Led Learning

Songwriting is a central part of our music programme. Students learn how to write their own lyrics, melodies, chord progressions, and song structures, developing their creative voice and musical identity.

Alongside original songwriting, students are encouraged to play and perform along to their favourite tracks and bands, building timing,

technique, confidence, and musical understanding in a way that is engaging and relevant to them.

At the heart of everything we offer, the student’s musical interests and passions come first. Lessons are personalised to each individual,

allowing students to explore the genres, artists, and styles that inspire them, while being supported in a positive, inclusive, and motivating environment.

Writing Music for TV, Film & Video Games

A key focus of our music provision is composition for TV, film, and video games. Students learn how to create music to picture, gaining

real-world insight into how soundtracks are written and used across media.

Students are taught by Sean Palmer, Head of Music, who has music signed to music libraries and placed on television and film. This provides students with authentic industry insight and a clear understanding of professional expectations.

Once a student completes a track, they have the opportunity to:

Sync their music to a film scene, TV trailer, or video game clip

Watch and listen to their work through our projector system, creating a real home cinema experience with their own music

Where student work reaches a strong professional standard, selected tracks may be pitched to a real record label, offering the potential for placement in television, film, or video games.

Vocal Recording Opportunities

Students who enjoy singing or rapping have access to a soundproof vocal booth, where they can record vocals in a professional studio

environment. Using industry-standard microphones and recording equipment, students learn proper vocal recording techniques while

building confidence performing in front of a microphone.

This space allows students to express themselves creatively, whether recording original songs, vocal hooks, or spoken-word performances.

DJ Skills & Music Collaboration

The Music Department also offers DJ tuition using professional DJ decks, led by Will Norman. This provides students with the opportunity to learn beatmatching, mixing, transitions, and live performance skills in a practical, engaging way.

Students who wish to explore DJing can mix and perform tracks created by their peers, including music produced by students working in music production sessions led by Sean Palmer. This encourages collaboration and gives students real insight into how music moves from production to performance.

Sean Palmer and Will Norman work closely together to ensure the Music Department is immersive, enjoyable, fun, and exciting, while the overall music provision is led and overseen by Sean Palmer, ensuring quality, structure, and progression for all students.

Practice Rooms & Live Performance

Students have access to a dedicated practice room, giving them the freedom to rehearse and develop their instrumental skills

independently.

The school also has a performance stage, where students perform live once a year. Family, friends, and staff are invited to attend, allowing students to showcase what they have been working on throughout the year in a supportive and celebratory environment.

Music Production

Students can choose to focus on music production, instrument tuition, or a combination of both.

Weekly Music Sessions

All students:

Take part in music production sessions two times per week as a class

Receive one-to-one individual lessons with Sean
