Mixx Lab is Fairlight Glen’s creative music production programme, offering all pupils the opportunity to explore, create, and express

themselves through music in a hands-on, inclusive environment.

As part of our commitment to becoming a specialist music school, Mixx Lab sits at the heart of our creative curriculum, blending

technology, performance, and professional industry insight to help our learners discover their sound and unlock their full potential.

The programme is led by Sean Palmer, an experienced music tutor, composer and music producer with over 20 years in the industry, having written  music for TV, film, and signed commercial releases.

Sean works directly with pupils to guide them through the entire music-making process from first ideas to fully mastered, high-quality tracks supporting them to develop skills in songwriting, sound design, recording, mixing, and mastering, regardless of their previous

experience.

Every pupil at Fairlight Glen is given their own iPad, and during Mixx Lab sessions, they use accessible tools like GarageBand, loaded with loops, samples, and recording features that make it easy to begin creating music from day one.

As they grow in confidence, pupils are introduced to more advanced techniques and professional studio equipment, including our fully equipped on-site recording studio, which features a sound booth, mixing desk, studio monitors, and industry-standard software.

For pupils who are interested in performance as well as production, Mixx Lab also offers access to a dedicated rehearsal room with a full drum kit, keyboards, electric and acoustic guitars, ukuleles, microphones, and more.

Pupils can learn to play an instrument one-to-one with Sean, or even form bands with other students and rehearse together in a supportive, encouraging setting. As their skills develop, pupils have the opportunity to take part in live performances throughout the year, showcasing their talent either individually or as part of a group in front of real audiences. Mixx Lab is designed to be accessible for all learners, including those with Autism, ADHD, Tourette’s, and other special educational needs.

The environment is structured yet flexible, with a calm, creative atmosphere that allows every pupil to engage at their own pace, build confidence, and find enjoyment in making music.

There is no requirement for prior musical knowledge or experience—just a willingness to explore and express. With Sean’s expert guidance and the school’s investment in high-quality equipment and creative opportunities, pupils leave Mixx Lab not only with a portfolio of original music, but with real-world skills in communication, creativity, and collaboration. Whether they go on to pursue further study in music or simply develop a lifelong love of creativity, Mixx Lab helps each young person discover what they’re capable of—and gives them the tools to bring their ideas to life.
